British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee created the first web server and graphical web browser in 1990 while <a href="{ $cern }">working at CERN</a>, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Switzerland. He called his new window into the internet “WorldWideWeb.” It was an easy-to-use graphical interface created for the NeXT computer. For the first time, text documents were linked together over a public network—the web as we know it.

Then { -brand-name-microsoft } began shipping { -brand-name-ie } with their { -brand-name-windows } operating system. Within 4 years, it had 75% of the market and by 1999 it had 99% of the market. The company faced antitrust litigation over the move, and { -brand-name-netscape } decided to open source its codebase and created the not-for-profit <a href="{ $mozilla }">{ -brand-name-mozilla }</a>, which went on to create and release { -brand-name-firefox } in 2002. Realizing that having a browser monopoly wasn’t in the best interests of users and the open web, { -brand-name-firefox } was created to provide choice for web users. By 2010, { -brand-name-mozilla } { -brand-name-firefox } and others had <a href="{ $marketshare }">reduced { -brand-name-ie }’s market share to 50%</a>.

How are we different? Because we’re mission-driven, it means we have the freedom to make all of our decisions based on what’s best for the internet and for everyone online, not based on the demands of shareholders — we don’t actually have any of those.

{ -brand-name-mozilla } consists of two organizations. The { -brand-name-mozilla-corporation } is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) { -brand-name-mozilla-foundation }. Which means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission.
